…and then some

Have you ever gone the extra mile? I bet if you have you were a blessing to others.

I have a friend who is someone who always goes the extra mile. For her children, her husband, her church, her friends, she does whatever she can to be helpful. She’s a saint; although she doesn’t think so. I suppose that is why I see her as a saint. Her humility is an example to others. Her joy is contagious. She is simply so entrenched in what it means to be a disciple of Jesus she understands and acts on what Jesus says about going the extra mile. She wants the best, believes the best, lives the best. Perhaps she is a living example of what 1 Corinthians 13 talks about as a vision of love.

So after reading Rebekah’s story again in Genesis 24, I wondered if she really knew what she was offering. I wondered if she knew those ten camels might each drink twenty gallons of water. Admittedly, I walk away from the faucet when my water purifier is filling my two gallon pitcher. It takes forever and then it takes two hands to carry. Can you imagine what gathering 200 gallons of water for camels would have been like for Rebekah? You probably don’t want to! Rebekah was a remarkable example of someone who went the extra mile. She knew what she needed to do and she did it…and then some.

I wonder what would happen if while you were at work you adopted an “and then some attitude?”

I wondered what might happen if you encountered someone in need and acted with “an and then some attitude.

What would happen if our relationships were lived as “and then some” people?

What would happen if our discipleship was committed to following Jesus “and then some?”

If you know what the expectations are this week at work, go the extra mile. You know what needs to happen tomorrow around the house. Get it done…and then some.

But, please, do it because of your love of God in Christ, not simply because a pastor told you to. Do it because Jesus offered us grace upon grace…and then some.
